#349 Who didn’t see this coming? (Religion)

love the show and appreciate that you do it, but was slightly offended by calling this one a “gay sex scandal,” and using a pic of a pride flag for the podcast. This was more than the gay prostitution ring scandal, it was also the child molestation scandal, and the last thing we need is to further encourage people to associate gays with pedophiles, particularly since pedophiles are more likely to be straight.

Sorry to only finally comment to complain, but being gay I am hyper-aware of how we stigmatized as a group we are, and I know enlightened people such as yourself do not want to further contribute to it.

Thanks, Christine. The image selection for this episode is outrageous. And it was exacerbated by the Young Turks clip, wherein the host led with a snide homophobia. The church scandal is about abuse of power, moral dysfunction and astonishing hypocrisy. To use the rainbow flag to represent the essential elements of this story is beyond belief–worthy of Palin, Hannity, Beck and Limbaugh. WTF?

I just heard episode 351 today, which was great by the way and so also heard Jay’s remarks at the end of the show concerning Christine’s comment etc. Later today I was reading around on BBC only to find this article titled “Vatican comment on paedophiles draws gay groups’ anger.” (link: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/8618878.stm). Just sad to see that Christine’s concerns are warranted.

Ok, every time the Catholic Church scandal comes up on any podcast, talk or news show it seems that one word, Homosexual, manages to get into the conversation. And every time I hear that I get furious. Priests are molesting children. Child molestation is not solely perpetrated as a sexual act; the molester is also on a power/dominance trip. This is why pedophiles look for positions in society where they are authority figures and where they can come into contact with adolescents. This is why we see so many cops, priests, and teachers engaging in these acts. It is proven that most molesters are “straight”, just as the person who abused me as a child was a white “straight” male. I am a straight female who happens to have gay family members, including my own son. These people in no way should be linked to pedophiles and I wish people in the media would start separating these issues.
