I was not offended by your latest podcast. I’m not going to burn you in effigy. I’m not going to denounce you as a heathen, or a Godless sinner that will burn forever in the depths of Hell. I’m not going to organize demonstrations, or stand on street corners yelling. I’m not that kind of religious person.
It’s very difficult being a religious liberal. On one hand, I have to deal with people in my faith that may act or think in the way described above. I bite my tongue when fellow parishioners tirade about Obama, or ‘the way things are going.’ I hope you never know the sting of feeling shunned from expressing your spiritual beliefs because of your political ones.
On the other hand, I can take little solace from my fellow liberals. Many see me as a naive simpleton because I humbly believe in and pray to an eternal creator. I listen to podcasts like lots of swears about religion and am reminded that I have no place here.
Like my conservative congregation, many liberals see me as part of the problem. I will never be one of them, just as I will never be a real member of my Church.
I want to say that religion isn’t the problem. I doubt many will believe me, but I know what the REAL problem is. Religion is only one of many outlets for the real problem destroying our nation: Extremism.
Its not religion that shuns me from my church — it’s extremism. Its not religion that keeps me from being accepted by fellow liberals — it’s extremism.
Religion can feed the homeless. Religion can fight for workers rights. Religion can breed compassion, understanding, forgiveness, self-sacrifice, and love… and only extremism can ruin that.
I wasn’t offended, just disappointed.

RE: 6/12/2010 podcast on Religion. I was not offended by this podcast, simply because there are many different ways that people express themselves and ways that they make a point on any given topic, if then involves swearing then so be it. Now, if anyone was offended by the comments made regarding specific religions then I would hope that if it is their religion that they would at least want to hear what is being said about it. From this they can be prepared to educate others that they meet in the broader community and change the perceptions or rather misperceptions that circulate regarding their religion. Thanks for another great podcast Jay!
