In regards to the call left by Tim from Quincy, IL, I’m not sure his focus on having a sustainable population had to do with their health and welfare as Jay focused on. I expected the focus to be on the introduction of new minds and alternative preferences brought into this metaphorically, isolated island by childbirth. A child doesn’t necessarily agree with their parent’s ideology. Therefore, wouldn’t children who disagreed with the structure of their birth island be obligated to relocate to another metaphorical island? Would a child be forced to agree to their island’s structure if they wanted to stay with their parents? Food for thought.

Did Cenk just say that he can trace the Palestinians to the 5th century B.C.? That is patently ridiculous. The Palestinian national movement has its traces in the 20th century. The tribes that are now called Palestinians came from Saudi Arabia with the Muslim conquests, but only began viewing themselves in a national perspective with French, English, and Egyptian influences in the late 19th to mid 20th century. No respected historian in the world would say that the Philistines are the ancient Palestinians, or even that the Latin name Palestine has anything to do with its people.

Newt is of course an idiot for making this argument because the Israelis and the Americans are also an invented people. But geez, Cenk, crank open a book! As a history major, I can tell you that was some ignorant crap. Any history book would suffice. I personally enjoyed “The Emergence of the Palestinian-Arab National Movement”, but really any book will do.

It is also interesting to note that there were only about 250 thousand Arabs in the early 19th century, and that the reason that there are several million Palestinians now is because of the improvement of sanitation that came with the Jewish immigration. (Of course then they did not view themselves as Palestinians, but rather as either Qaisi or Yamini, rivaling clusters of tribes.)

You know, sometimes I get the feeling that Cenk’s ignorance is deliberate when it comes to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict…
