I don’t know if this comment will be read by many people, but I heard it first on Best of the Left, and I love that podcast, but this segment and commentary really struck me. I am a teacher, I am allowed, by the choice of my profession, to deal with and instruct and mentor young people on various aspects of their lives. I am a social studies teacher, which also allows me the opportunity to learn from and instruct my students on current events related to past events and facts. I understand, as a white man, that I am a part of one side of the race issue by some people’s assumptions and generalizations, and I understand that a person who is subject to generalizations and historical prejudice has a right to be angry and upset. However, as I was listening to this clip, and agreed completely with the premise that Obama as president upsets white racists, and that attacks on him are racist, and that there are evident undertones of racist exemptions to the constitution, amendments, etc. However, what upset me, is that despite the very intelligent points and examples of white racism given in the discussion, the commentators/experts/people speaking consistently used the words “they” and “them.” These terms are not used in this discussion “off-handedly” or absentmindedly, but intentionally and with purpose. The purpose was to present a obvious “us” versus “them” mentality based on race. While discussing the terrible consequences of racial thinking and intent in our past as a country, the people in this clip committed, in my opinion, the exact same sin of creating an “us” and “them” situation. I had a difficult time dealing with the feeling that I was being convicted, despite my own feelings regarding race and disgust with racism and ignorance, of being part of the “them.” I do my best in class and in my own personal life of never giving a person the idea of a “us” and “them” when it comes to race. My students are people. I know intelligent people, not black or white. I love and have as part of my family many beautiful people, not one that is black or white. If we really want to get through this idea of Black, White, Hispanic, Brown, Yellow, etc. then the people who are intelligently speaking about the past “us” and “them” should make sure they are not creating a present “us” and “them” in the dialogue about the issue.
