US, Russia and China oppose UN’s gay rights mission
Of course, let’s not forget the Roman Catholic Church who is opposing gay rights, listing improbable and nonsensical justifications for their intolerance.
“An unprecedented declaration seeking to decriminalize homosexuality won the support of 66 countries in the United Nations General Assembly on Thursday, but opponents criticized it as an attempt to legitimize pedophilia and other ‘deplorable acts.’
Cheney approved CIA’s torture tactics
“Vice President Dick Cheney said Monday that he was directly involved in approving severe interrogation methods used by the CIA, and that the prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, should remain open indefinitely.” – Greg Miller, LA Times
Read about Cheney’s confession after the break!
A moral decree from the vatican’t
“The Vatican issued the most authoritative and sweeping document on bioethical issues in 20 years on Friday, taking into account recent developments in biomedical technology and reinforcing the church’s opposition to in vitro fertilization, human cloning, genetic testing on embryos before implantation and embryonic stem cell research,” report Povoledo and Goodstein of the NY Times.
In case you need yet another organisation to give you moral advice and dictate your personal life decisions (as if mom and dad weren’t enough), read about the Vatican’s decree after the break!
Familial terrorism in Pakistan (Video)
“Westerners associate terrorism in Pakistan with suicide bombers, but the real emerging terrorist threat for Pakistani women is being disfigured by acid attacks, often by their own husbands, Nicholas D. Kristof says.” – NY Times Video Opinion
Read on to see the disturbing video about thousands of women’s lifes in Pakistan. Warning: the video contains graphic images and is not suitable for young children.
Justice not for all
Melissa Etheridge spoke out against the approval of Proposition 8. In the Daily Beast, Melissa bravely states that if she does not have the same rights “under the state constitution as any other citizen,” then she (and the entire gay community) should not be expected to pay state taxes “because [she's] not a full citizen.”
Why do people care more about chickens (I’m referring to the recent passing of Proposition 2) than members of their own species? Why are some people more equal than others?
Read further for excerpts from Melissa’s response to Proposition 8. I think she’s got it exactly right.
